Being an editor is a power position. You can give (add clips to the timeline) just as easily as you can take (remove clips from the timeline). Lift and extract work as the complete inverse of insert and overlay.
With lift, you mark the portion of your timeline (with in and out points and the desired tracks) that you want to remove. Overlay covers up whatever is in the timeline without altering any of the shots outside that marked area, but lift does just the opposite. Lift removes the portion that is marked without affecting any of the shots outside the marked area, as shown in Figure 3.8. This leaves a blank area in your timeline, holding the duration of the area where the clip(s) previously existed.

Extract works in the opposite manner of insert. Again, Insert editing adds a clip to your sequence and pushes everything on those tracks farther down in the timeline. Extract removes the marked area from the timeline and shifts back everything that was on the selected tracks, butting up the new edit points so that there is no blank area left in the timeline from where the segment was removed (see Figure 3.9).
